But the adversary entered into Judas, who was called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.

Luke 22:3

The literal meaning of the name ‘satan’ is adversary. And that derogatory description is altogether appropriate, for that is all this fallen angel has ever been, an enemy. The reference here to the adversary ‘entering’ Judas is unique in Scripture. We do not really have anything else to compare it to. But what can be said is that this was not a situation in which Judas was forced to do something altogether against his will. The enemy doubtlessly deceived Judas in the process, but Judas was not an unwilling tool. Judas had become increasingly dissatisfied with Jesus and His plans, and his chief motive at this point was fortune.
We do not know exactly what the name ‘Iscariot’ means, but it does differentiate this Judas from other disciples. Judas was one of the twelve, and as such participated with the group in their activities. He was not, however, included in the inner circle like Peter, James, and John.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness! Every day I wake up to the same God. You don’t change while I sleep. You don’t stop being the person I’ve always known You to be. You are still interested in my life and care for everyone I know. I never have to wonder if You are going to leave me. And Your Truth, though always new and fresh, never morphs into something scary. I can pursue after You and Your wisdom every moment and never be disappointed with the results. Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.
