The Mountain's Name

When it was daytime He was teaching in the temple, and when it was night He was going to to spend the night in the mountain that is called Elaia.

Luke 21:37

Names are different when it comes to translation. You name probably has a specific meaning, but rather than translating it and using that translation to refer to you, we leave it untranslated and refer to you that way. For example, my name is William, which is originally Germanic in origin, and is derived fron the name Wilhelm. It comes from words for ‘will’ and ‘helm’ and denotes a resolute protector. However, we do not call anyone ‘resolute protector’, but we do use the name William.

In the same way, the name of the Mount of Olives is Mount Elaia in Greek and Har ha-Zeitim in Hebrew. This is not the only place in Scripture that we have multiple names that are fairly unknown. For example, there was a young lady named Hadassah that we all know about. But we often don’t recognize her unless we call her Esther.

Heavenly Father, thank You for what You call us. Though Christ we are Your children. We are forgiven and so very blessed. Thank You for all that You have done for us. We will forever praise You and thank You and glorify You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray and praise You, Amen.

Considered Worthy

Therefore be alert, asking in every season that you may be considered worthy to escape the things about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.

Luke 21:36

Christians are, and will be, present for many of the things that Jesus mentions here. We should be alert that we may be able to help others and warn them. And, as Jesus says in Revelation, we are to ‘endure till the end’, which means to continue in the faith so that we can stand before Him as He says here.

Heavenly Father, thank You for You love and care for us. You desire all of the best things for us and our lives. Thank You for Your holiness and what it means for us. You lead us into things we never would have dreamed possible. I praise You for Your great wisdom and amazing grace! You will always be the tower I can run to! Luke 21:35

The words Jesus chooses here indicates that His second coming will be similar to His first from the standpoint of the rulers of the earth. When He came and was born in the manger, the vast majority of the rulers of our world were oblivious to the fact. When He returns, He will profoundly surprise the great powers of earth.

Heavenly Father, I am overwhelmed by Your might and Your goodness. But above all, I am inspired by Your holiness! You are holy, holy, holy!!! Thank You for revealing Your Son to us and allowing us to have a relationship with You through Him. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

That Day Stands Near

But pay attention to yourselves so that your hearts will not be burdened down in carousing and drunkenness and anxiety over life’s issues, and then suddenly that day stands near upon you!

Luke 31:34

The ancient Egyptians had a concept of the weight of a person’s heart. A heavy heart was a sign of a bad life. Though their concepts concerning the afterlife were incorrect, God uses the same heart motif throughout Scripture. He is the One Who ‘weighs the hearts’ and He is the final judge.
Thus, Jesus once again refers to His role as the Judge and warns us to have a ‘light heart’ in preparation for the day of His return. Christians should not deal with the problems of this life in the same way that humans often do in sinful ways.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for Your Truth in my life! Your Word provides answers to my most important and troubling questions. I am in awe of Your wisdom! Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Luke 21:32

This verse has a double prophetic meaning. First, the current generation of the Israeli people at the time that Jesus delivered this prophecy did not pass before the destruction of Jerusalem. Second, the generation of the Israeli people, in other words the very existence of descendants of Jacob on earth, will not pass away before the time of the end.

In the Bud

Luke 21:30

Jesus didn’t use simple illustrations because He thought His listeners were stupid. No. The simplicity of the illustrations that Jesus and the New Testament authors use is meant to make a point. God has surrounded us with processes of nature that help us understand Him and His Word. Good doctrine can be illustrated well by the straightforward functions of nature because nature’s Creator is also the Author of good doctrine.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us access to so much in Christ! May we stop seeking the things we do not need and start rejoicing in the things You provide abundantly, but we so often miss. Thank You for the Victory! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Your Redemption

But when these things being to take place, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.

Luke 21:28

Jesus is taking a step back and refers to the whole discourse here. He would not have people to wait until He is revealed to look up. He is saying that when many of the things He references her occur, people should be looking for His return.

It is important to understand the word ‘redemption’ here. Redemption is used in Scripture to refer to any deliverance that God provides, whether by the force of His might or a price paid to His justice. In this case, redemption refers to the yet future works of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the soon return of Your Son! As we celebrate this week the redemption of salvation from sin provided by the death and resurrection of Christ, we look forward to the victory He is bringing to this world on the day that He returns in power and glory! As this verse says, people will be very afraid of God’s power, and the impact of His wrath upon the universe will be obvious.

Patient Enduring

In your perseverance, possess your souls.

Luke 21:19

This is quite an interesting verse. and just like the previous one, we may ask how this is to be understood when Jesus just said some would be killed. But this serves to clear up the matter completely if we understand it properly.

The wording here is quite strange, but also very specific. True saints will persevere to the end. Nothing can separate a true Christian from Christ. If one belongs to Him, he or she shall continue in Christ until death. In that perseverance, true saints of God ‘possess’ their souls. This means that, no matter what may happen to any child of God physically, they are eternally saved and will be resurrected just as Christ has been.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints! It is of great comfort that we can know for sure that we are truly in Christ. But beyond that, we can be confident that our spiritual life will not somehow be cut short. We shall be Yours forever! Oh glorious thought! Not a Hair

Not even a hair of your head shall be lost.

Luke 21:18

How can Jesus say this after He had just said some of His followers would be killed? The statement He is making here about a single hair matches with a comment we have recorded back in Luke 12:7, and also in Matthew 10:30. God values us so much that He numbers the hairs of our head.

This is quite a unique and powerful statement. Regardless of what may happen to any one of the Lord’s servants, He has a log of all that pertains to each of His children. Being the creator, death is no barrier for Him. His power is absolute, and He has a beautiful plan for the future of His people. In this future His children will not only be alive, but evidently even past hair will be remembered to their blessing. We lose hair, skin cells, and other things all the time, so this is a testament to the infinite knowledge of Almighty God.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being so Wonderful! You are amazing beyond all of our wildest dreams! It has always been a special blessing to me that You number our hairs. Luke 21:15

The significance of this seems to be that the Lord will give His people not only great wisdom to deal with adversaries, but also the correct attitude to have or approach to take when doing so. He gives an assurance that the defence offered will be coherent and will not be defeated by some logic of the other side. This is a good comfort and encouragement to those who are persecuted.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us wisdom! Your wisdom is such an amazing gift, and it provides us with so much comfort. Do Not Prepare

Therefore decide in your hearts not to prepare a defense.

Luke 21:14

Initially, this seems contradictory. There are many Scriptures that suggest Christians should be prepared to defend the faith. However, we must pay close attention to what is being said here. Jesus is not suggesting that we never prepare ourselves to give good answers to those who truly seek the truth, or are at least willing to listen. Instead, He is specifically saying that we should not prepare to defend our faith when persecution brings us before political officials.

In other words, we are to live expecting to have opportunities to freely share our faith, and for such opportunities we should be prepared. Conversely, we should not live in anticipation of persecution, though we suffer under no delusion that it will never come. When persecution does arise, we will be given the words to say, but we are not to prepare in anticipation of that eventuality.

This actually makes a lot of sense. The gospel message is good news and should be shared as such. We are to prepare to share good news with people who are at the least willing to listen to our message. When we share with those who have already made it abundantly clear they are set against Christ, His church, and His gospel, we are not to prepare anything additional or different to fit the occasion. As the next verse explains, the Lord will give us the words to say at that point. We are not to be sitting around dreaming up things to say in response to adversaries. Instead, our focus should be on preparing to share with those who will choose to listen.

Heavenly Father, thank You for working in and through Your people! It is such a privilege to be used by You for Your goals. In Your service we find great joy. Your wisdom is clear. You have sent out Your messengers to those who will choose to hear. Thank You for making Your truth known! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

One day the world will unite only briefly under the antichrist. But then, after the judgment of the devil, Jesus will rule a unified world for 1000 years.

The word Jesus uses here where He says ‘do not be frightened’ is unique. It is not the standard ‘do not fear’ that we usually see. It seems He is reassuring them that although some fearful situations will occur, they need not be terrified as if these things mean the end is already here.

The ancient building method for structures like the temple was to pile up hewn stones. The idea was to make a permanent edifice that time and disaster would not remove.

Thus, to actually ‘destroy’ such a structure, one had to ‘unpile’ the stones. Because of this, Jesus is describing a complete destruction; one in which the enemy would make the effort to completely erase the formerly existing building.

The temple was and is the most important thing to any orthodox Jewish person. And yet, at this time the people of God largely missed the Lord Himself. Everyone, Jew and Gentile alike, should learn from this reality. Buildings are great, but God is greater.

It is as if the message here is that this woman was seen as just ‘poor’ to most, but Jesus highlights the fact that she is destitute. Indeed, in the next verse Jesus uses yet another word to describe her desperate financial situation.

She may very well have been a victim of the avarice of the Scribes Jesus had just been speaking about.

If ever someone had an excuse to give less, it would have been this poor widow. As little as she gave, she could have given less. Many others would be giving far less of their relative income on that day, though their gifts would be larger. But this woman gave out of a full heart, and she gave a genuine gift.

Love Honor

Beware of the scribes, who are fond of walking in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplace, and the seats of honor in the synagogues, and the places of honor at feasts,

Luke 20:46

Each of these things is not necessarily bad. There will be those who appropriately sit in a place of honor, and long robes were not inappropriate attire in every case. But the emphasis here is on the litany of ‘first-place’ honors and recognitions that the scribes loved to always have. Each of these things would afford them the greatest attention and the feeling of superiority.

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us the ignorance of pride. It will always hurt us, and it destroys good society. We will constantly remind ourselves of the truth that You are Sovereign over everything, and we can trust Your tender care. You will see to our honor; we do not have to seek it ourselves. Thank You! Life lived for You is full of joy rather than empty pleasures that fade. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray and praise you, Amen.

Where All Could Hear

The where all the people could hear, He said to His disciples,

Luke 20:45

Jesus had compassion on the multitudes. He attempted to guide the Jewish people to the truth. He did truly desire their repentance, though He knew what would happen.

Heavenly Father, thank You for going on with Your plan in spite of us! You are good regardless of what we do. Your mercy, grace, and love are Your own. We cannot fathom Your character, it is wonderful to us. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

How Then

David therefore calls Him ‘Lord’, how then is He his Son?

Luke 20:44

The logic here is airtight. The Jewish elites had no idea how to answer such a question. It seemed to them to be an irreconcilable conundrum. And, indeed it is if one refuses to accept the fact of the virgin birth. The Christ would have to be both human and Divine simultaneously, and the virgin birth is the means by which that was possible.

We might be tempted to think that the truth of the hypostatic union was altogether hidden and the Jews were justified in largely missing it. But such is not the case. There is a plethora of evidence for it in the Old Testament, not just the passage from Psalms that Jesus presents here. To miss it requires that one be resistant to the idea.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving to us Your Truth in spite of our tendencies towards unbelief. You are merciful and Your faithfulness cannot be overemphasized. We praise Your Wisdom, the Christ. He has made our lives abundant and free. Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Your Footstool

‘Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’

Luke 20:43

This verse is short but loaded with meaning. The ‘until’ here should not be taken to mean that after this footstool business the Lord will be somehow demoted. The point is that there is a process by which all the enemies of the Lord will come to naught. And, God the Son sits on the right hand of the Father, the place of honor, as this process takes place.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and Your grace. Thank You for reminding us of how You work in our lives each and every day. Your wisdom is something we look to constantly. We search through the pages of Your word and apply ourselves diligently to study, because we know Your words are of inestimable value. We praise You for Your loving kindness and for Your truth! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray and praise You, Amen.

The LORD Said

Even David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at my right side,’

Luke 20:42

Jesus is here quoting Psalm 110:1. The ‘LORD’ refers to the I AM, the proper Name of Almighty God. The ‘Lord’ is Adonai, meaning Lord or Master. This is a perfect example of the reality of God the Father and God the Son in the Old Testament. Jesus is setting up for the Jewish leaders one of His most profound attempts to get the truth across to them.

Heavenly Father, You are the One Who we adore! You in Your Trinity are amazing and wonderful beyond description. I stand in awe daily of Your mighty power and perfect truth. Thank You for Your love and goodness! I cannot thank You enough for Your leading. I will look always to Your way for me. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray and praise You, Amen.

Son of David?

Then He said to them, ‘How do they maintain that the Christ is the Son of David?’

Luke 20:41

Jesus is preparing to delve more deeply into the doctrine of the hypostatic union than the Jewish leaders were prepared to bear. Jesus is not here challenging the idea that the Christ is the son of David. He is challenging the means by which the Jewish religious elite could make sense of that truth.

Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding our lives! It is a joy and a privilege to be able to seek Your will and Your face in connection with our daily activities. It is a wonder to be able to turn through the pages of Your Word and see things that help us in our daily lives, as well as our lifelong choices and aspirations. You are merciful, loving, kind, and good to us. We praise you for your great wisdom, power, justice, and faithfulness! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray and praise You, Amen.

Nobody Dared

But they no longer dared to ask Him anything.

Luke 20:40

Jesus was too hot to handle. Interactions with Him were dangerous games for the ruling elite. His intellect, insight, and authority were enough to keep them up at night. They could not afford to rock the boat with the Romans, and any popular uprising could make waves. Their attempts to question Him had been calculated risks. But at this point, the risk had clearly become too great.

Heavenly Father, our earthly wisdom is so limited! We think we know and understand so much, and yet we are still incredibly limited. Without Your Word and Your world to guide us, we are so primitive and evil. Thank You for making Your truth available, and for keeping us humble. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray and praise You, Amen.

The Scribes Respond

And the Scribes responded, saying, ‘Teacher, what you said was good.’

Luke 20:39

The Scribes were experts on the law, and like the Pharisees they did not agree with the Sadducees about the afterlife or spiritual things. Some of them may have truly been impressed by the words of Christ. But they likely made this compliment primarily as a barb against the Sadducees who were present.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the good teaching of Christ. The Word is our constant companion. In the pages of the Bible we find comfort, healing, and power. I praise You for the Truth and Your plan to reveal it to us. You are wise beyond all others and we can always trust Your faithfulness. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

God of the Living

He is not God of the dead, but of the living. To Him they are all alive.

Luke 20:38

Jesus teaches this to His disciples on several occasions. For example He refers to some, who had died, as sleeping. Physical death is not meant to be considered an end in the theology of Christ.

Life comes from God and is determined by God. This is what is meant by ‘to Him they are all alive’ in this verse. To us they are dead. But to Him they are very much alive.

Heavenly Father, thank You for life! We are surrounded by a society full of death and decay. But You are at work for life in every moment. You teach us truth and love and grace and show us the Way to life. Jesus is the Life! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

That the Dead Rise

But that the dead rise, even Moses reveals in the bush passage, as he quotes the Lord, ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

Luke 20:37

Jesus is directly quoting from Exodus 3:6. In that verse, Moses records how the Lord identified Himself to Moses. All three patriarchs had of course been long since dead by the time that the Lord was speaking to Moses in the bush. And yet the Lord Himself refers to them as if they are still alive.

Indeed, Jesus could have quoted many Old Testament passages to affirm this truth. Job for example confirmed the resurrection. But for the Sadducees, the reference to Moses would be particularly impactful.

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us Your truth beyond the pale smudge of death. We live so burdened by death, and held down by it. But it is a consequence of a temporary condition. May we live to look beyond the stain of sin to the glorious future in Your love! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

Sons of the Resurrection

Nor can they die any longer, for they are like angels, and are the sons of God, sons of the resurrection.

Luke 20:36

Saints are not angels. But just like angels, the saints will not die after the resurrection to glorified bodies. This makes sense because death was not originally a part of our world. Saints living in the world today are children of God spiritually. But at the resurrection, they become children of God physically.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word and our access to it. Your mercy to us is made obvious by Your sharing of Your Word. You have commanded us to take it to everyone, everywhere. That shows Your great love. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.

In the Resurrection

But those who are counted worthy to obtain that age, and the resurrection of the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage.

Luke 20:35

It is very interesting how Jesus words this. We often use the terminology, ‘those who are saved’ but the redeemed are referred to in many ways in the New Testament, and we should learn from them all. Jesus is not teaching works salvation here, but He is highlighting the fact that the saved are considered ‘worthy’, meaning that the work of grace made possible by the cross does include justification. Justification is the key to understanding how imperfect people are made perfect by the blood of Christ. And, thus, due to the righteousness imputed to the saints, we are accounted ‘worthy’ to obtain that future resurrection.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the many things You teach us in Your Word. You have given us so much to consider and learn from. Almost daily I am presented with things from Scripture I had never before considered. Thank you for the constant stream of Your beautiful wisdom and understanding from Your Truth! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.
