But pay attention to yourselves so that your hearts will not be burdened down in carousing and drunkenness and anxiety over life’s issues, and then suddenly that day stands near upon you!
Luke 31:34
The ancient Egyptians had a concept of the weight of a person’s heart. A heavy heart was a sign of a bad life. Though their concepts concerning the afterlife were incorrect, God uses the same heart motif throughout Scripture. He is the One Who ‘weighs the hearts’ and He is the final judge.
Thus, Jesus once again refers to His role as the Judge and warns us to have a ‘light heart’ in preparation for the day of His return. Christians should not deal with the problems of this life in the same way that humans often do in sinful ways.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for Your Truth in my life! Your Word provides answers to my most important and troubling questions. I am in awe of Your wisdom! Thank You! In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray and praise You, Amen.
